WEDNESDAY, September 23, 2020 – Why do we need museums?
On the occasion of its 100th birthday, the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden 2012 asked the fundamental question: Why do we need museums? In view of the temporary closure of museums during the COVID-19 pandemic, this question has cropped ip once again. What function can museums have if they cannot be visited or can only be visited with restrictions? Through which topics do they keep their relevance? How do they reach their audience? How do they measure their success? Each question will be followed by an impulse statement, which will be discussed directly with the workshop participants; they will also include their own questions.

THURSDAY, September 24, 2020 – Why do we need exhibitions?
The COVID-19 pandemic is changing the conditions for exhibitions. This affects the relationship between special and permanent exhibitions as budgets become tighter, the number of loans is limited, and target groups must be redefined when international tourism disappears. However, the design of exhibitions is also changing: routing and mediation services must be rethought and taken into account in the content conception. Finally, the question of sustainability also arises here: is it still a matter of ever larger, spectacular, special exhibitions or do the museum's own collections offer the potential to be rediscovered and exhibited?

MONDAY, September 28, 2020 – Why do we need digitalization?
Digitalization is a central driver of the transformation of museums and offers the opportunity to make more content accessible than ever before. In the COVID-19 pandemic, this trend has intensified as Digitalization was often the only remaining channel for communication with the public during closures and limited operation. Since the culture of Digitalization is based on empowerment and participation, the question of how to use digitalized collections and data for dialogue at eye level and for real interaction between museums and their users has become more pressing. After two contrasting inputs from a small museum and a large museum network, the moderated workshop will focus on this question.
