Henry Arnhold Dresden Summer School 2026, Schlosskapelle, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen
What role do images, art, and culture play when social conflicts escalate? How are experiences of war and violence depicted, remembered, and conveyed? And what options for action do cultural institutions have in the face of polarization, disinformation, and authoritarian tendencies? The Henry Arnhold Dresden Summer School 2026, taking place October 25–31 in Dresden, will address these questions.
Under the title “Violence. Power. War—Art and Culture in Polarized Times,” the session on October 26, 2026, will explore the role that cultural images and institutions play in social conflicts. In his lecture “Violence Through Images: Social Media as a Driver of Disinhibition,” Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich will discuss the impact of images in digital public spheres. The focus will be on how social media is changing the way we deal with violence, how images can exacerbate political and social conflicts, and what consequences this has for public debates.
